Elliptical Trainer Information About Knee Injury

  • Posted on December 24, 2011 at 10:53 pm

Elliptical Trainers and Treadmills are great pieces of exercise equipment for getting in shape. Recently elliptical trainers have begun to eclipse treadmills in popularity. As elliptical trainer information becomes more and more available to the general public this trend should continue. The ability of elliptical trainers to prevent and protect joints, muscle and bones is a major advantage. As the population gets older and the baby boomers enter retirement, elliptical trainers will become increasingly more popular. Elliptical machines will allow intense full body exercise routines to be conducted with relative safety.

Treadmills have pretty much been the main piece of fitness equipment found local gyms and fitness centers. However, my doctor recommends that I stay off them since my knee was scoped 5 years ago. We love doing our road work outdoors on natural surfaces, however, here in Southwest Florida with its high temperatures and humidity during summer, we prefer exercising in air conditioning. Exercise physiologists and doctors tell us that when you use a tread mill that is not perfectly adjusted, each time your foot strikes the belt it slides forward a small amount. It is this motion that causes knee injury. If you are over 150 lbs. and use the treadmill for running it can be very noticeable and sometimes uncomfortable. Many times my knees will ache after just two miles of a light jog on a treadmill. I recently talked to an exercise equipment repair technician who told me that about 80% of all treadmills are not adjusted properly. The main cause is that it is expensive to properly maintain treadmills and that they can easily become out of tune. I have on more that one occasion tried more than one treadmill at our local fitness center before I found one that did not have a pronounced belt slip.

Elliptical trainers are easier on our knees due to the greatly reduced impact. They also do not have the belt slip problems that hurt our knees. Some people describe running on an elliptical trainer to something like running on air. It does take a little getting used to the change in motion but it does allow you to do a good aerobic workout when your knees are sore. In fact some physical therapist use elliptical trainers as part of their recovery programs. I have also noticed that I can exercise longer on my sore damaged knee on an elliptical trainer than I can on a treadmill. Many quality elliptical trainers have the ability to change the angle or slope of the elliptical motion. This has a major benefit in that it will allow you to change the shape of the stroke to eliminate pain and discomfort during your exercise routine. Several times when my knee would start to tighten up I have been able to complete my exercise program by simply changing the angle or slope on the elliptical machine. You should never try to force a joint problem through a painful exercise routine. Doing so may cause permanent damage or least a trip to the surgeon for expensive repairs.

Elliptical trainers and treadmills will continue to be popular pieces of fitness equipment. Treadmills have been around for a long time but have some inherent problems in regard to knee injury problems. Elliptical trainer information programs are educating the public to the benefits of low impact aerobic exercise. Each individual should spend time researching what piece of equipment meets their exercise goals and fitness condition. In our opinion it is hard to beat all the benefits that an elliptical trainer provides.

Fitness experts have argued that the elliptical trainers provide about the best total body workout available from about any piece of fitness equipment on the market today. Elliptical machines equipped with movable handle bars allow you to get a total body workout somewhat like the natural movement of cross country skiing. Unlike treadmills the low impact motion provided by an elliptical cross trainer allows you to conduct an intense workout without risk to your joints, tendons and ligaments. All of which allows one to achieve a more intense workout with less perceived effort. Sometimes described as running on air it requires a short period of use to get accustomed to the elliptical movement. Once this muscle memory is developed then you will never go back to using a treadmill again.

In many fitness centers you will find that there are more elliptical trainers on the floor than treadmills or any other type of exercise equipment. Fitness centers are a good place to get acquainted with piece of exercise equipment especially ellipticals. If you are considering purchasing an elliptical trainer for your home you need to do your homework before you decide to buy. The best piece of adviceis that when it comes to elliptical trainers you basically get what you pay for.

You should really expect to pay at least one thousand and preferably twelve hundred dollars to get a reliable elliptical machine that has the features most users prefer. Low end or cheaper elliptical machines frequently have reliability problems are noisy and in some cases may be unsafe during a vigorous workout. Some models tend to be unstable and start cat walking across the floor or even tip over.

Obviously one of the best places to get elliptical trainer information is on the Internet. Take your time and read all the reviews available on each model that is in your price range. No matter what model of trainer you are considering you should always take the effort and time to take it for a test ride. This workout should be at the maximum intensity that you would use during your normal workout on an elliptical trainer. This can be accomplished by taking your workout gear to your local dealer’s showroom and take 30 minute ride. You can also check out the better fitness centers, gyms and YMCA’s to find the model you are interested in and take it for a test ride. Make sure that you test several different models including higher end machines so that you can make a better judgment of equipment quality.

During your test ride note the placement and movement of handle bars, peddles and flywheel. Check out the peddles to make sure your feet will not slip off with moisture from sweat or when you get tired. Peddles should be wide enough to allow you to comfortably change foot positions during your workout. Check out the console and workout programs to see if they meet your needs.

If you are dealing with a store front dealer take the time to ask them to provide you with references in the form the names and phone numbers of customers who have purchased the elliptical trainer you are interested in. Call these people and ask them about performance and service problems as well as what they liked about their elliptical trainer.

Probably one of the most important features of any piece of exercise equipment is its warranty and customer service record. Also ask the dealer to give you a copy of the warranty for the specific elliptical trainer you are interested in purchasing. Ask about extended warranties for ellipticals. You should always consider purchasing an extended warranty with every piece of exercise equipment that you purchase. Again do your on line elliptical trainer information research. You should stay clear of any manufacture that has poor record of customer service.

Despite all the warnings purchasing a quality elliptical trainer will provide you with years of quality service as well as help you achieve your fitness goals.

Pedometer Walking Fitness Information

  • Posted on November 20, 2011 at 6:12 pm

The first pedometer was probably invented by Thomas Jefferson, and it was a pendulum based mechanical device that counted steps. Modern pedometers are electronic or digital in format. To find the best pedometers for you, start with learning how they work, and how they have become more accurate in counting steps. Pedometer popularity has exploded as people search for a way to walk the 10000 steps daily that experts often recommend for fitness. You can often see everyday people with a pedometer on a belt clip, at work, at the gym or out walking. These devices need to be worn all day long for the best accuracy.

If you have walked 5 miles, you have walked ten thousand steps, the number that fitness and exercise experts use as a stand in for achieving the minimum required exercise each day. The classic Roman Mile consists of a thousand paces, and each pace is 2 steps. If you eat a sensible low-calorie diet with your doctor’s approval, you may experience weight loss from a pedometer based walking program.

If you need encouragement to keep up your diet and exercise program, consider getting a pedometer. You may find yourself walking more, more active, reducing your bodyweight and even participating more in other forms of exercise. Weight loss and more activity may even lower your blood pressure at the same time your clothes fit better.

The first pedometers often recorded steps that the user had not taken. Good pedometers nowadays use better technology that reduces false information recording. Today pedometers have built in technology that records motion over several axes. Advanced software programs interpret the mechanical impressions, and the result is a much more accurate device overall. We look forward to the release of next generation devices with even better sensors and software.

To record the distance you walk, your new pedometer will require some initial setup. Because your leg length is individual, you must teach your new device how to count the length of your stride to accurately determine the miles you have walked.

Watch out for pedometer technology that has been integrated into other devices. The best pedometers available online seem to outperform the technology built into phones and music players. Look out for third generation pedometers available soon that integrate with web-based software, and even allow you to track the food you eat each day.
